digital painting
pixel art for work & home
I have spent the last eight years developing skills in digital painting. I started this process in 2011, when I used a drawing tablet for the first time and realized how much flexibility having that sensory feedback gave me as an artist. I started using Photoshop to create theatrical designs, particularly scenic and costume designs, and my projects have evolved from that beginning. More recently I have worked on creating character portraits for TTRPGs (tabletop role-playing games) such as 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons and Call of Cthulhu.
To make each painting, I start with a hand-drawn sketch to give me a basic layout to work with. Next, I load the sketch into Photoshop and digitally trace each section using my tablet. I separate out the elements into layers and fill each with basic color. Then I begin filling in texture, light, and shadows. Finally, I add in any details that were not in the initial sketch.
