As a designer for the San Antonio Express-News, I was charged with making new collateral for the YourSA Readers Choice Awards program. With a new logo styled after decorative papercut papel picado, I was asked to make twelve distinct designs to serve as chapter headings.

 

To make these art pieces, I looked to each section’s categories for ideas; for example, for “Eat & Drink”, the categories were things like “Best Burger”, “Best Breakfast Tacos”, and “Best Local Coffee”. I pulled from stock or created elements to represent those categories as needed, or, most frequently, pulled something semi usable and made edits to be what I needed. I then arranged and combined those elements in a papercut style.
